China Digital TV at CCBN 2009:
At the exhibition, China Digital TV showcased new features of its CAS system, which include support for various value-added service applications for digital TV programming, such as push video-on-demand, personal video recorder (PVR) with content protection and two-way public key infrastructure (PKI) authentication.
The Company also demonstrated its Electronic Program Guide (EPG) advertising platform. China Digital TV’s EPG can transmit text, images, audio and video clips among other forms of data to set-top boxes at high-speed. The EPG’s flexible and rapid content delivery ability enables a new advertising platform on digital TV networks and requires minimal hardware upgrades.
Additionally, the Company demonstrated several end-user solutions including the NSM 6008 “air mouse.” The NSM 6008 provides precision three-dimensional positioning and employs “air mouse” and “air multiple points” input methods which substantially improve the user interface and are applicable to various peripheral applications including remote control and gaming console.
The applications include write recognition for kids in Chinese and English, as well as calculation with feedback if wrong. The remote control can be adapted on any set-top box with a USB port (just need the driver) to plug the receiver. They are started field trial. It also allows to browse the interface. It is very similar to the Wii remote.
They were also presenting bluetooth smart cards allowing to bring interactivity to existing set-top boxes. They evaluate the market to 40M STB without 2 ways connection. Bluetooth smart cards communicate with the mobile which acts as a modem. It brings extra business models to operators, like click on remote when watching ads and receive coupons on mobile…
I also had the chance to meet the General Manager of the newly created Overseas Business Dept., as China Digital TV has decided now to sell products outside China.
